In the period of
rule of Slobodan Milosevic’s repressive regime, human rights were
being systematically abused in our country. The October democratic
changes heralded a new phase of development. However, in spite of
this, in a still unreformed legal system, Serbia / FRY cannot be
regarded as a country where human rights are no longer abused. This
primarily refers to economic and social issues, that make it impossible
for the people to evolve from subjects into citizens. The struggle
against racism, nationalism and other forms of hatred and discrimination,
the struggle against terrorism, the uprooting of corruption, opening
of secret files, civilian control of the Army and the Police, adopting
conscientious objection as a human right, cooperation with international
institutions, including the International Tribunal for the former
Yugoslavia, are only some of the issues that the state has to attend
to before we can talk of broad respect for human rights. Every change
calls for efforts and entails new changes, and it is in this spirit
that we mark 10th December – Day of Human Rights, the day
when the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the Declaration
on Human Rights.
Human rights are
that smallest common denominator that exists everywhere in the world
and that pertains to all humans, irrespective of their status, sex
and nationality, political and other opinions.
The area of human
rights is always open to progress, therefore we call upon our officials
to everything that is within the realm of their possibility to enable
our country to join the European Council, so that the instruments
of this organization would also involve our country and that the
protection of human rights could be developed to the full and properly
ensured .
On the occasion of
10th December – Day of Human Rights, we will hold a protest on Republic
Square, from 15:30 until 16:30 pm.
We hereby invite
everyone interested to join us.
